Great themed treats don’t have to be hard to make. Take these tombstone brownies. Made with a sugar cookie headstone and a simple brownie grave, they are easy to assemble but pack a potent bit of Halloween fun.
The tombstones can be made with a refrigerated sugar cookie roll and packaged brownie mix (or use pre-made in the bakery of the supermarket) and frosting. The “grass” can be made by shaving green candy melts with a vegetable peeler. A pumpkin candy finishes the look.
To make, start by making the headstone cookies.
Etsy.com has some great tombstone cookie cutters for a low price. Or for some more fancy headstones, check out The Gingerbread Cutter Company on Amazon. Once you have chosen a cookie cutter, add brown food coloring to the sugar cookie dough and knead to blend it in. Flour your work surface and roll the dough out until it is 3/4″ thick. Transfer to a cookie sheet and bake according to the package.
While the headstones bake, prepare the brownie mix (if you are baking it). Pour into a baking dish and bake as directed. Once baked, remove and let cool. Frost using chocolate icing.
Once the headstone cookies have cooled, use a Wilton Decorating Gel in white to write your messages on the headstones.
Determine the width of brownies using the cookie cutter as a guide. Using the chocolate icing, adhere the cookie to the brownie. Finally, sprinkle the green chocolate shavings onto the brownie and top with a candy pumpkin.
Plate the tombstone brownies and add Halloween decorations.
In addition, serve these with Jack-O-Lantern Whoopie Pies. Probably two of the easiest halloween treats you could make. And all generations enjoy eating them. So buy a roll of cookie dough and a box of brownies and have some fun.
